A move costs money, but you can get part of it back through your tax return. What matters is the reason for the move and a correct invoice.
Job-related move: income-related expenses
If you move because of a new job, a transfer or to shorten your commute considerably, the moving costs usually count as income-related expenses. This includes transport, the moving company and often a lump sum for other costs.
Private move: household-related services
Even for a private move it is worth looking at your taxes. The labour costs of a moving company can be claimed as household-related services: 20 percent of labour and travel costs reduce your tax directly, up to an annual maximum.
What matters
- Invoice: list labour costs and materials separately.
- Payment: by bank transfer, not in cash.
- Records: keep the invoice and bank statement.
